As shown in Table 8, vegetable oil in Japan is supplied via (1) oil expressed
from the raw materials of agricultural products (oilseeds, etc.) and (2) imported oil. In
2025, only eight types of main raw materials are expressed in Japan: soybeans, rapeseeds,
corn
(germ), rice bran, sesame seeds, cottonseeds, peanuts, and linseeds. Although other types of
seeds such as sunflower seeds and safflower seeds were also expressed previously, Japan
currently imports crude oil and then refines that crude oil in Japan. This is more
efficient.
Table 9 shows the major countries that supply the main types of oilseeds and
oil to Japan. As you can see, the only raw material supplied in Japan is rice bran. Also,
corn is not imported by oil-manufacturing corporations; instead, it is imported by
corporations which manufacture starch. After the removal of starch, oil-manufacturing
corporations collect the corn germ for expression.

Notes:(1) Although the table shows raw materials (oil seeds), crude oil is also imported
from overseas in some cases.
(2) Countries listed in green are the main countries
from which Japan imports. The bold text in this section corresponds to green text
